AR Lab#02: Augmented Reality Autos

“From Our AR Lab”

Every now and then we do stuff in testing that will never see the light of day….. that is, until now.

Concept:

Placing a 3D version of a new car in Augmented Reality is now possible with Layar. Couple this with an audio and video tour and you’ve got a great tool for selling autos. This is an early concept – the positioning and altitude issues seen in the screenshots can easily be ironed out in a production version.

The new “AR lab” category of this blog will show you some screenshots of our concepts… and, maybe if there’s sufficient demand to produce it, we will.

LAB01 – The Burj Khalifa in Dubai

This is a 1:1 scale 3D model (860 meters high) of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai shown in augmented reality. The first screenshot (below) is taken 558 meters away from it.  If you walked towards it,  the true scale of this super-scraper would become clear

here it is from a little nearer:

December 14th: Delivers European Directory Layars on time and on budget. They’re scheduled for launch at the beginning of January.

December 20th: Buys domain name AUGMENTAL.ORG – that’s gonna be good for something – not sure what yet!

It’s been an exciting rollercoaster of a journey so far and we can’;t wait to see developments in the next 12 weeks – let alone 12 months :)

Latest news and a few thoughts

Blogs are not my forté, so instead of writing one,  here’s a few thoughts, list-stylee.

  1. I suggest if you’re the head of a large company without an augmented reality presence in 12-18 months time, you will have to play catchup (remember when the Internet started?)
  2. Handset augmented reality is definitely going to be the first type of AR to enjoy commercial success. The ubiquitous nature of camera-enabled smartphones ensures that.
  3. AugmentReality is now taking orders for Layar development.
  4. Our Layar web-service has been updated and improved to serve up error-free, and fast, layars.
  5. We are exploring further the merging of the social Internet and AR.
  6. We have new and exciting ‘viral’ Layars in production.
  7. Layar 3D is going to be AWESOME!

50’000 downloads!  downloads

Considering our oldest apps have been live just a shade over 5 weeks we think that’s pretty good going.

Coming soon we have our first international apps with POI spanning the globe – and a 3D concept we are itching to tell you about…. but can’t yet :)

Also, I’m seeing Layar on the home page of the (UK) iTunes App store under the “New and Noteworthy” section. which should put a lot more users online.

These are exciting times indeed!
